There is a bit of mystery of my grandfather’s side of the family – which creates some frustration while trying to trace back the line. The story goes like this…
The White family emigrated from England to the Carolina’s and from there travelled west on the Wagon Train. While traveling, Native Americans attacked the train and all of the White family were killed…EXCEPT for one baby boy! A family named Clark took him in and raised him, and they settled in West Virginia. This baby is who we call Mr. White.
The information given to me by some family members could be outdated…meaning, maybe they have discovered more information now, I am not sure. I am, of course, still in the process of sorting this all out (and probably will be for a while), but this is what I have currently. Note: A lot of what got me started was given to me by my grandfather and I believe one of his cousins had done the research. I am not sure on the accuracy of this information. I have also done my own research on ancestry.com to fill in the gaps.
Generation No. 1
- MR. WHITE (In my own research, I believe his name may be William and he may have been born around 1819. However, I can not 100% verify this, so Mr. White is still a big question mark in my family tree.)
Children of Mr. White:
- BAZIL A. WHITE, b. 2 Jan 1844, d. 25 Apr 1896
- NAPOLEON B. WHITE, b. Feb 1838, d. 1916
Generation No. 2
2. BAZIL A. WHITE. He married ELLEN FRANCIS MORRIS May 12 1870 in Kanawha Co, West Virginia, daughter of ROBERT MORRIS and ELIZABETH WILLIAMS.
Notes for Bazil: I’ve found several different spellings for his name and actually think there may have been 2 different Bazil Whites alive at approximately the same time. I base this on the forms for Union Civil War Vet’s headstones. (image below) The first two are both Bazil/Bazel with different rankings and different death dates, so it stands to reason there are two of them. Which, of course, makes research so much harder. As far as military documents I’ve seen, our Bazel spells it with an E instead of an I. …but that could just be the person filling out the form. Who knows. So. Frustrating.
Okay, so my relative has several more notes on him – which included the story at the top. These are not my notes so I can not attest to their validity. But here they are:
